The Girls on the Roof

Written and performed by Mary Swander and Monica Leo

Two women, Maggie and Pearl, a mother and daughter, find themselves stranded on top of the roof of Crazy Eddy’s Cafe for three days in 1993, in the middle of a flood driven by climate change. There, they discover each other’s deepest secret.

In this one-hour adult production, The Girls on the Roof, Mary Swander reads poems from her book and performs on the banjo. Puppeteer Monica Leo, of Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre, brings the scenes alive through the use of hand, rod, and shadow puppets.

This show, filled with old time music, romance, intrigue, humor, folklore, and the flora and fauna of the Mississippi River basin, asks basic questions about the survival of humans and their relationships on our struggling planet. The performance will spin the brain with its ecological insights, dazzle the ear with its poetic rhythms, and delight the eye with its likenesses of an unforgettable cast of characters.

Included with the performance of The Girls on the Roof are optional workshops for children or adults, by Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre. Create shadow puppets or Czech-style hand puppets, or experience a puppet potpourri. For more info, click here.
